Research of Magpies
Magpies are birds with white, black, blue and green feathers. They belong to the Corvidae family. They have black legs just for them to walk and land, and powerful medium length beaks, which they use for catching prey.
You can find magpies across England, Wales and Ireland, but more localised in Scotland, absent from the Highlands.
Magpies live in woodland, farmland, grassland, heathland, upland, urban, suburban and wetland.
The black and white Eurasian magpie is one of the smartest animals around the globe. It can recognise itself in a mirror test, which is impressive for the bird.
In the summer magpies eat beetles, flies, caterpillars, spiders and worms. In the winter they eat wild fruits, berries and grains.
Magpies usually breed from two years old although some may produce at one year. Females start laying eggs from two years old. They lay about six greenish-blue eggs with spots.
Magpies live for about three years.
